Maine coon breeders will usually have a clause in their contract about rescue clubs and surrendering their kittens back to them.
These cats are well adapted to a harsh climate. They have a glossy coat, which is heavy and water-resistant. It is longer on the ruff, stomach and britches to protect against wet and snow. It is shorter on the back and neck to guard against tangling in the underbrush. A weekly combing is all that is usually required to keep it in top condition.

The cats have a long, bushy tail, which it tends to wrap around itself when it curls up to sleep. It can protect the cat from cold winters. The ears of the animal are more heavily furred.
